Music Faculty

  • B.S., Music, Johnson University (Knoxville, TN)

    Mr. Boyer has taught piano for 50 years, and been a part of the YMV family for many years including as a teacher since 2013. He has been a full-time pastor since 1980 and has spent 20 years in various roles including church pianist, choir director and worship leader. Mr. Boyer has studied piano with Dr. Vernon Overmyer at the University of Southern California, was a finalist with the Orange Symphony Young Artist Competition, was a soloist with the Long Beach Community College Orchestra and Palomar Community Orchestra. He and his wife, Tina, have six children and 12 grandchildren.

    Mrs. Browndorf is affiliated with St. John the Apostle Catholic Parish, Bishop Sullivan High School, St. Bede's Tidewater Intergenerational Ensembles, and Philadelphia International Music Festival. She has been a private Orchestra Strings, Woodwind & Piano instructor at Moe's Music for 10 years.

    Mr. Card is the Executive Director of the Tidewater Winds, auditioning and hiring their musicians, overseeing fundraising, scheduling and serving as guest conductor. He is an adjunct music professor at Tidewater Community College (Norfolk campus). He has served as Band Director for high school and college level bands and is a low brass player as well.

    More than 13 years teaching experience, and more than 20 years performing experience, including professional performances with acts such as Donna Summer and Stevie Wonder.

    Dyanna's degree in Music Education has an emphasis in piano and voice. She is sole proprietor of Songbird Music Studios and has been teaching for nearly eight years. She accompanies at Norfolk Academy for the children's choir, talent shows and musicals. She is also involved with a non-profit theatre company, Arts Inclusion Company, where she served as Vice President of the board. She's accompanied for Broadway shows such as Les Miserables and Seussical. She is a member of the American Guild of Organists and recently took the Service Playing Test for certification. Dyanna is currently an organ student, under the supervision of Michael Regan. She was also a former student of Hye-Yun Bennett and studied harp for two years. She finds joy in teaching beginning to early advanced piano, beginning voice, beginning harp and organ.

  • Mrs. Lewis has been teaching piano for over 33 years. She also has experience in directing choirs from kindergarten through adult ages in schools and churches. Mrs. Lewis has been with YMV since March 2004. She and her husband, David, have four children, three of whom are married, and are proud grandparents to two granddaughters.

  • Mr. Loyola teaches private lessons in saxophone, clarinet, and flute. He studied music in the Philippines and at the Armed Services School of Music. He is a full-time professional performing musician. His teaching experience includes the Armed Services School of Music, the Governor's School for the Arts, and private lessons. He is employed at London Bridge Baptist Church and retired from the U. S. Navy as a Master Chief Musician. He is married, with one child, and lives in Virginia Beach.

    Mr. Meyers is married to Mary, his lovely wife and have two wonderful teenage boys, Isaiah (15) and Secheriah (13). He has over 20 years playing experience and over 14 years teaching professionally. Mr. Meyers was featured on a worship album with the band "Audience of One" and served on staff as worship leader and program director for the Jeremiah Project Middle School Mission Camp for the past 10 years. He also serves as worship director for the PIN Ministry (People in Need), a homeless outreach to local people and families at the Virginia Beach ocean front. Mr. Meyers dreams of living in Hawaii one day and is known for wearing Hawaiian shirts frequently. His favorite food is peanut butter and he enjoys surfing, riding his motorcycle, walking his dogs and spending time with his awesome family.

  • B.A., Music, Bob Jones University; M.A, Music (Violin Performance). Ball State University.

    Mrs. Umlauf played in the first violin section of South Bend Symphony (South Bend, Indiana). She currently performs with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Sarah is a home-school mom of two daughters and in her spare times enjoys biking with them and her husband, Matthew.

  • B.A., Vocal Performance, Virginia Wesleyan University (Honor Graduate), majored in vocal performance and minored in piano.

    Mrs. Williams has an emphasis in teaching certification classes and 18 years piano study. She is a native of Chesapeake, Virginia, where she still resides with her husband, Billy, and their two children.

    Dr. Sonya Austin brings to her class a successful background in Education, Team Management and Communication that spans more than 20 years, with precise problem solving skills. Dr. Austin is a passionate instructor, who consistently strives to help her students to gain knowledge about God and how we are to live out His purpose for our lives.

    Crystal Barnett has been home-schooling for seven years, and her daughters have been a part of YMV for the past three years. Crystal enjoys outdoor activities and traveling with her family.

  • B.A., Education, Hunter College; M.A., Education, Queens College; PsyD, Education (AB.D), Yeshiva University

    Dr. Bell has taught at YMV for 11 years. She also is in charge of the Home Educators of Virginia (HEAV) Homeschool Convention in Richmond, VA in June. She and her husband, Antoine, have four home-schooled children and live in Virginia Beach.

  • B.F.A., Acting/Musical Theatre, Wright State University.

     

  • B.S., Spanish Literature, Excelsior College (SUNY), with minors in French and History. Post grad linguistics work at ODU.

    A polyglot (fluent in 3 languages), Mrs. Daugherty has lived abroad for several years in French and Spanish speaking countries, with teaching assignments in Paris, Seoul, and Mexico City, among others. Her Spanish translator work included for a Norfolk State University delegation at the University of Havana (Cuba), while her French translator work included Togo (West Africa) for Martin Luther King III. She began home-schooling in 1984 and finished home-schooling her youngest in 2012.

  • B.S., Elementary Education, Bob Jones University

    Amy taught fifth grade and ran a private tutoring business in the Chicagoland area for five years before moving to Hampton Roads in 2003. She began homeschooling in 2008 and has enjoyed sending her two sons to YMV since 2011. She and her husband serve the community with Bible studies and a hospitality center for the military near Little Creek.

  • B.S., Biology and Chemistry, Wilmington College

    After graduation, Sarah worked as a chemist until moving to the area with her husband. They have been married since 2008 and have three children, Benjamin (5), Isaac (3) and Rosalee (1). She absolutely loves science and believes that God's awesome power is no more clearly displayed than when we observe His creation.

  • MFA, Theatre/Performance Pedagogy, VCU

    As a teaching artist specializing in Voice and Speech, Kate has taught in the BA/BFA actor training program at VCU as well as Point Park University. Courses taught include: Voice and Speech for the Actor, Shakespeare, Acting Styles, and Accents and Dialects for the Actor. She also teaches Public Speaking. She freelances as a private audition coach, specializing in musical theatre repertoire as well as classical text.

  • Bachelors of Fine Arts in Art Education (K-12) from University of North Carolina in Greensboro; Graduate work in Changing perspectives in Education from Temple University.

    Mrs. Southern teaches art to all ages, including an Open Art Class for adults at YMV. She has taught elementary school, middle school, and high school art in Pennsylvania before coming to Virginia Beach where she taught art in the elementary school for 17 years. Mrs. Southern has taught for home-school art at YMV for over 6 years, which she considers to be the "Star in her Crown" of being an art teacher. Mrs. Southern and her husband, Steve, have been married for 18 years.

    Mrs. Williams and her husband, Robert, have been married over 32 years and have three home-schooled children who love music and attended YMV. Their family has been part of YMV for over 17 years. Currently, she also oversees the student edited YMV Yearbook in addition to serving as YMV's Academic Director.

    Dana has four children ages 8-16 (three girls and one boy). Her family has been home-schooling for the past seven years. They were part of a co-op in Lynchburg where Dana taught a variety of subjects for three years including English/Language Arts. they move to Virginia Beach last July to because of her husband's job at Regent University. Dana taught English at Bina High School and was a reading specialist at Bridgescape Learning Academy in Norfolk.

    Mrs. Grice has been the YMV Executive Director since 2006. All five of her children have been blessed with a YMV education.

  • Stephen, his wife Mimi, and their 5 children have been living in Virginia Beach since the Navy brought them here in 1994. A YMV fundraiser introduced them to the home-school program in 2005, and they were so impressed with the excellent music instruction, well-rounded academics, and professionally run administration that they enrolled that Fall. YMV has now been an integral part of their homeschooling experience for 11 years.

  • Dawn Martin has been involved with Young Musicians of Virginia since 2004 when she enrolled her youngest child in the Beginner Band class. The support of the teachers and staff at YMV helped ensure a successful homeschool experience for her family of four. The musical training and performance opportunities available at YMV have truly enriched their lives. Formerly a volunteer and then Finance Manager for YMV, Dawn is currently on staff at a local Baptist church in Chesapeake, Virginia. She and her husband, Roger, recently celebrated 31 years of marriage and look forward to experiencing many more years of God's faithfulness.

    Mr. Lewis David is the Technical Operations Manager for Lifetouch, where he has worked since 2003. His wife, Sharon, has taught preschool and elementary home-school music as well as private piano at YMV since 2003. The Lewises have 4 children all of whom attended YMV. The Lewis family attends First Baptist of Norfolk where they serve by leading a Life Group targeted at newly married couples.

  • B.S., Liberal Arts Studies, Regent College (Albany, NY)

    Mr. Williams is an Associate Pastor at New Life Worship Center in Norfolk, Virginia. He serves as the Department Head of Christian Education which includes Firm Foundation/New Members Class, Children’s Chapel, Sunday school, and Vacation Bible School. All three of his children are graduates of the YMV Enrichment Program. Mr. Williams's family has been associated with YMV since 2001.
